Multiple people were killed when a plane crashed at the Statesville Regional Airport in rural North Carolina on Thursday morning, erupting into a large fire on the runway, according to the Associated Press.

The airport reported that there had been an “aircraft incident” at around 10 a.m. local time Thursday morning. The local sheriff’s department confirmed that there were multiple fatalities, according to the AP

Ron Smith, Statesville’s city manager, confirmed during a press conference on Thursday that there had been a crash at the airport, but did not provide any further information on the cause of the crash or how many people may have died.

Airport manager John Ferguson said the Federal Aviation Administration had taken over the scene and was leading the investigation into the crash. The airport will be closed until further notice, he said.

Public records reportedly show that the plane involved was owned by an aviation company controlled by NASCAR star Greg Biffle, according to local TV station WSOC-TV. The airport says on its website that it “provides corporate aviation facilities for Fortune 500 companies and several NASCAR teams.”

It is not known who may have been on the plane when it crashed, the station said.
